ARC Scotland
ARC Learn
ARC Scotland's learning platform: online courses for people working in health, social care and education, with a certificate when they finish

The need
Where it started
ARC Scotland has designed and delivered training for people working in health, social care and education for years. It wanted a learning platform of its own, where professionals can take ARC's courses online, at their own pace, and get a certificate when they finish.
Who it's for: Professionals in health, social care and education, parents and carers, and the ARC Scotland team who publish the courses.
Our role
What we did
We built ARC Learn for ARC Scotland: the course catalogue, each learner's journey from sign-up to certificate, and the admin area ARC's team uses to publish courses. The courses themselves are ARC's. They're uploaded as SCORM packages, the standard format most eLearning authoring tools export, so adding a course doesn't mean changing the platform. Courses have versions, so an update can be prepared before it's published.
The build
What we built
- A course catalogue that people can search, and filter by level, who a course is for and price
- Sign-up, enrolment and a course player in the browser that records each learner's progress and completion
- A certificate when a learner finishes a course, for their CPD or CPL record
- An admin area where ARC's team creates courses, uploads new versions and publishes them
- SCORM package upload, with size and safety checks on every package before it's accepted
- Sign-in through WorkOS, a contact form and a newsletter sign-up
- Hosted on Microsoft Azure, with course packages in Blob Storage and email sent through Azure Communication Services
Results
What changed
- Professionals take ARC's training online, at their own pace, and get a certificate for their CPD or CPL record
Accessibility and data
Looking after people
ARC Learn works with a keyboard and screen readers, and text scales with the browser's settings. It's set in Atkinson Hyperlegible Next, a typeface designed for low-vision readers. Its controls are built on React Aria, and automated axe tests and accessibility lint rules catch common problems in the code. Course uploads are checked against size and safety limits before anything reaches learners. Learners' personal data is hosted on Microsoft Azure and encrypted in transit and at rest, and sign-in runs through WorkOS. Under ARC's privacy notice, an account unused for five years is closed after ARC checks with the learner and its personal data is deleted, and course feedback is kept only in anonymised form.
Since launch
What we still do
ARC Learn has been live since April 2026 in a soft launch, with ARC's first course, An Introduction to Transitions, and more courses planned. We still support and develop it for ARC Scotland, alongside Compass, and ARC's team works directly with Blair on both. We'll add completion and feedback results here once ARC has measured them.
