Can we start with an early idea?
Yes. Compass started as an idea and an unmet need, with no software at all. We'll help you turn yours into a first release people will use.
Do I need a detailed spec?
No. A rough idea is a good place to start. You don't need a specification, existing software or any technical knowledge.
How do we agree a first release?
In discovery, we look at what you want to make possible and who it's for, then agree a first release that does something useful for them. You get a clear plan and cost before anything is built, and we plan later stages together.
Can you work with our existing software?
Yes. We can develop a platform you already run, connect to the tools you use, or replace a system piece by piece while it keeps running. We'll also tell you when an existing tool would do the job.
Who will I talk to?
Blair, our founder and the engineer who'd lead your project. We don't have a sales team, so you get straight answers from the person responsible for the work.
Do you use AI to write the code?
Yes. Blair agrees with you what gets built and makes the technical and security decisions, and AI writes code to that brief. Automated tests and AI review tools check each change, and Blair reviews and signs off every one before it goes live. The AI tools we use never see personal data from your service: they have no access to its live databases, and logs are anonymised. Every AI service we use to write, review and check the code processes it in the EU, on business or API terms that don't allow training on it. If your organisation has an AI policy or a list of approved tools, we'll work within it.
Is the call really free?
Yes. It's 30 minutes, it's free and it commits you to nothing. If new software isn't the answer, we'll tell you.
How much will it cost?
It depends on what you need, so we don't publish prices. You get a clear plan and cost for the first release before anything is built, and support after launch is an agreed monthly amount. Blair agrees with you what gets built and signs off every change, and AI writes code to that brief, so more of your budget goes on what people need.
What happens after launch?
We stay on to support and develop it. Most clients stay with us after launch, and our longest partnership has run for more than six years.
Who owns the code?
You do. Once it's paid for, the code and intellectual property are yours.
What if WheelHouse can't carry on?
We build with standard, widely used tools, so another developer could pick up your software. The contract sets out how we'd hand over the code and everything needed to run it.
Do you work outside Edinburgh?
Yes. We're based in Edinburgh and work with charities, public bodies, founders and businesses across the UK.
